This is a blog from the last site. I decided to repost because of a recent exchange on face book, I hope some find it informative.
I started really looking for the facts of the aerial hunting of wolves in Alaska, to see how much of it may have been hype and how many true facts I could find out.I am here to tell you that I was sincerely surprised by what I found, very easily. The horrible massacre that is happening
not only to the wolves, but thanks to the present Governor( now Former Govenor, Palin), the bears as well, is truly heart breaking. I understand that there are many
people that hunt to feed their families. But, I do not know anyone that feeds their families wolf as a meal. These great animals form tremendous family bonds
themselves. They are also hunters, but they hunt only what they need to eat and feed or protect their families. I wish humans could say the same.
Right now in Alaska, there are areas where you are permitted to kill 10 of these noble animals EACH DAY. Not a month, a year or 1 every 10 years, but 10 wolves
can be mowed down each day. This is not hype. You can look at the Alaska Department of Fish and Game's own Internet
site to read this for your self. I'll give you the link to that information, but I like to search things like this out for myself. It is so unbelievable
that I want to make sure I am not being directed to some fake site. It is that hard for me to believe, but here is the link and notice the limits in unit 19 (this
is how they separate areas in Alaska for hunting, by units).

I hope that you noticed the season for this also. These poor wolves are being hunted like this 10 full months of the year, amazing. As for their justification
for needing aerial hunting they worded that information a bit more cleverly, but not much actually. I quote,
"Currently, five wolf control programs are underway that comprises about 9.4% of Alaska's land area. The programs use a closely controlled permit system allowing aerial
or same day airborne methods to remove wolves in designated areas. In these areas, wolf numbers will be temporarily reduced, but wolves will not be permanently eliminated
from any area. Successful programs allow humans to take more moose, and healthy populations of wolves to continue to thrive in Alaska."
This is also from the Alaska Department of Fish and game's Internet site. Here they specifically address and state that it is permitable to hunt down wolves and wolf packs from helicopters. Remember each person can shoot 10 each day, because this practices does cover that unit 19 area. There is also the practice of chasing them in small planes until they are completely exhausted then land and shoot them as they lay there, being too tired to run or hide. Sounds like a great sport doesn’t it? It not only amazes me that this would be legal, but that there are people in this world that have a desire to do these things. The only justification they give for this practice is to make it possible for people to kill more Moose. These animals are not endangering humans, eating their livestock or encroaching into populated areas. Unbelievable! And to state that it is a controlled permit system, yes this is true, they limit each person to only 10 kills
per day, over 60,0000 square miles.
This is not against the people of the great State of Alaska either. They have actually voted this practice down twice in November 1999 and November 2000, but the
Alaska Legislature passed bills to override those votes. In 1999, the then Governor vetoes the bill, but the Legislature then overrides the Governor and passed it into
law anyway. For more recent news on this issue
- March 2007
- Alaska Department of Fish and Game decides to issue more aerial-
gunning permits and offer a $150 incentive, or bounty, for killing wolves. This would be collect by
bringing in the leg foreleg of the slaughtered wolf. The bounty is ultimately dropped in the face of a stiff legal challenge.- May 2007
- Gov. Sarah Palin introduces legislation at the end of the legislative session that would remove many barriers to wolf control. The bills are referred to committee but the
legislative session ends without any movement.
- Aug 2008
- Alaska citizens to vote for a third time on a ban on aerial hunting of wolves.
Please help us stop this. Tell others about this, write your representative, write Govenor Palin, donate money, email your representative, email President Obama,
anything, everything. Don't just sit back and allow this barbaric practice to continue. If you are not moved to act yet, maybe this will help. Two more
states, Wyoming and Montana are trying to use Alaska as a guide to be able to adopt the same practices.
Please don't let this continue, or God forbid, spread to more areas. Thanks for you time and attention. ~Tracy
